Bowling great leg-spin is not the easiest discipline in cricket, but in Bruce Wilson the Proteas Veterans have a master of his craft.
‘Cookie’ is one of the few players in the squad without provincial or representative cricket under his belt, but for 20-odd years he was part of a very successful Claremont side which won many trophies with players like Gary Kirsten, Jacques Kallis, Alan Dawson, Dean Payne and Lance Bleekers in the line-up.
Wilson was first selected for the Proteas Veterans for the 2020 Over-50 World Cup, taking an incredible 4/9 in six overs in the opening match against Wales.
He cites being selected for his country as the highlight of his career: “Getting selected for South Africa and playing with guys I used to pay to go and watch … I’m really grateful and thankful.”
