Northern Cape Veterans Cricket to host Veterans National Club Championship

The Veterans Cricket Association of South Africa is proud to announce the hosting of the 3 rd National Club Championships in Kimberley from 29 -31 August 2024.

This year nine teams will represent their respective provinces/regions as their league champion clubs and they are as follows: Bohemian CC (Border, 2022 Club Champions), Northville CC (Eastern Province), Stellenbosch Strikers (Boland), Primrose CC (Western Province), Old Edwardians CC (Lions), Phobians CC (Titans), King Cetshwayo CC (Dolphins), Kempton Park CC (Eastern Storm) and hosts, Black Diamonds CC (Northern Cape).

Group A will include clubs representing Dolphins, Lions, North Cape and Western Province. Border, Eastern Province, Eastern Storm, Boland and the Titans will contest Group B. The T20 matches will take place at the Sol Plaatjes University Ovals, Country Club B and Kimberley Boys’ High School main oval.

The tournament is being sponsored by New Vaal Mercedes Kimberley, Fuso and Cell C.

Professional lawnmowers will once again sponsor a 25 inch cylinder pitch mower to the winning club. Bohemian CC and Irene Cricket Club were worthy recipients of the prize in 2022 and 2023 respectively. Devils Peak Breweries and Bevco will provide liquid refreshments for the teams and Pitchvision will live stream all the matches on the CSA YouTube channel.

The Kimberley tournament will be dedicated to Des Schonegevel, fondly known as Uncle Des. Schonegevel played first class cricket for Griqualand West and Orange Free State and upon retiring became a prominent coach and administrator in Griqualand West/Northern Cape playing a pivotal role in the development of Yorkshire Cricket Club in Galeshewe. He was the first chairperson of Griqualand West Cricket after unity in 1991, playing a key role in unifying racially separate cricket organisations. He co-founded Desnics Planet Sport, a sporting goods business in Kimberley.

Northern Cape Veterans Chairman and tournament director, Rizwan Engelbrecht whose father played for Griqualand West, says that teams can expect true Griqualand West hospitality.
